Astro Doughnuts had a pop-up at Chinatown Coffee Co back in December. Amazingly, they were sold out one hour later, but luckily, I made the cut, having bought 2 doughnuts around 8:45am. I got the creme brulee and grapefruit glaze, both yeast doughnuts.
Ever since trying The Doughnut Plant's creme brulee doughnut, I've been trying to find something in the DC area that would conjure up the same happy memories. I'm happy to say that Astro may have one of the best creme brulee doughnuts I've ever eaten...maybe even surpassed my original expectation of being as good as The Doughnut Plant. Surely, they do their creme brulee doughnuts a bit different - Astro has a large yeast doughnut, with creme brulee filling the inside, but not terribly icky and oozy like jelly-filled doughnuts, and TDP makes small doughnut hole-sized creme brulee doughnuts, and it comes with the burnt sugar glaze on top. It's such a steal to get such a large creme brulee doughnut for under $4. I give that one a solid 5, and I think Astro's become my favorite DC doughnut shop.
Astro's grapefruit glaze was less impressing, since the grapefruit flavor was light compared to the amount of dough. I may be biased though, I'm usually not impressed with such fruit flavor-glazed doughnuts, because I always think that the fruit flavor is too faint. It happened with Palena's lemon doughnut (I'm never having that again), and it happened with Zeke's passion fruit doughnut.
I can't wait for Astro to open - it's been delayed from the Jan 2013 opening to (hopefully) March 2013 in the Metro Center area!
